The subjects Caleb Thimell selects to depict are taken from a wide range of sources including old photographs of celebrity icons, classical Greek statues, and stills from black and white films. These sources serve as a vehicle to explore dramatic lighting techniques that he employs to create mood. Thimell's drawing process is similar to his painting process. He uses a toned surface and works from light to dark, building form in a series of layers. He aims to recreate the subject he references by deliberately distorting the image.
Thimell received his BFA from The Art Institute of Chicago in 2005. His animated short screened at The Gene Siskel Film Center and the Chicago Reel Shorts Festival in 2006.
