Carolyn Wenning is a mixed media artist living in Pittsburgh, PA. Having grown up in the western Pennsylvania aesthetic, parts of this terrain such as expansive views, rivers, forests and the industrial landscape often find their way into her work. Materials and process often lend information to concept. Layering elements such as charcoal, tar, wax, raw pigment and paint, Wenning creates expressive interpretations of topography and place. The work occupies a space between abstraction and figuration. Initially inspired by the landscape, the images quickly depart to a more poetic realm directed by gesture, space and color.
Wenning exhibits nationally and internationally; most recently at The Mine Factory and Sweetwater Center for the Arts in Pittsburgh, and at Obras Residencies in Estremoz, Portugal. She has been included in exhibitions at The Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, The Andy Warhol Museum and The Mattress Factory. Her work has won numerous jurors and special recognition awards and is held in private and corporate collections. As well as producing her own work, Carolyn is a dedicated art educator. She has taught in the public school system and at various universities including Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Chatham University and the School of Education at Carlow University. Her academic training includes an MFA in painting and print media from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and a BFA from Carnegie Mellon University.
