As a landscape painter living in the shadows of New York's Hudson Valley and Catskill Mountains, artist Crista Pisano is fortunate to be following in the footsteps of some of the greatest Hudson River School Painters from the 19th Century and American landscape painters that followed. She often finds herself overwhelmed to be a part of this great tradition in American history, painting in some of the same locations where her heroes have painted before her.
Pisano's intimate landscape paintings are started on site and en plein air. It is not only the act of painting en plein air, but also the observation of her surroundings and environment that allows her artwork to capture the feeling of the space she is painting. Her goal is not to copy or record what she sees, but to interpret and suggest in paint what she is looking at.
Pisano was born and raised in northern New Jersey. In 1989, she began painting in oils at the Ridgewood Art Institute in Ridgewood, NJ. While there, Pisano studied portrait, still-life, and landscape – which became her main focus. She participated in shows and won various awards at the Ridgewood Art Institute throughout high school. In the fall of 1996, Pisano began the BFA program at the Lyme Academy of Fine Arts in Old Lyme, CT. She graduated Lyme Academy in the spring of 2000, receiving her Bachelors of Fine Arts in Painting. In 2003, Pisano received a Masters Degree of Fine Arts in Painting from the New York Academy Graduate School of Figurative Art in Downtown Manhattan.
Pisano is a member of numerous art organizations including the Barrett Art Center in Poughkeepsie, NY, the Rye Art Center in Rye, NY, the Garrison Art Center in Garrison, NY, and the Lyme Art Association in Old Lyme, CT where she is an elected member. She exhibits her work throughout New England, New York, and New Jersey, and has received various awards and honors. Her paintings hang in public and private collections throughout the country.
