Nicole Renee Ryan's paintings focus on emotionally charged but ambiguous images of people and places, with only fuzzy details around the edge which leaves the viewer with a strong sense of déjà vu. The false memories of people and places Ryan creates are either overly romantic or tragic and are defined as much by what is missing as by what is present.
Ryan blurs out details, preferring her viewers fill in their own, imagining themselves in place of the painted subject. Ryan wants the suggested history of her image to feel like the viewer's history. Her subjects have flattened, blurred faces that blend into the landscape. Ryan's clouds melt into the horizon. The resulting paintings are soft, unfocused, and distant. A memory almost lost. Misremembered. Imagined.
Ryan is a contemporary watercolorist, oil painter, and muralist from Mercer PA, currently working in Pittsburgh. In 2015 Ryan was awarded a residency at the New York Student’s League at Vytacil, a fellowship at VCCA, and was nominated for Pittsburgh's 2016 "Emerging Artist of the Year". She is also featured in the newely released book of watercolors, Splash 15: Texture, by North Light Books.
